How to Contact Your Representatives Effectively

Your representatives are in office to serve you, and they need to hear from their constituents to know what issues matter most. However, not all forms of contact are created equal. Here is how to make sure your voice is actually heard.

1. Personalize Your Message

Staffers receive hundreds of template emails every day. A personalized message that explains how an issue affects you personally is far more likely to be noticed and summarized for the representative.

2. Be Specific

Don't just say you're "unhappy." Refer to a specific bill number or a concrete policy goal. Tell them exactly how you want them to vote or what action you want them to take.

3. The Power of the Phone Call

Taking two minutes to call their office is one of the most effective things you can do. You will usually speak to a young staffer who will record your name, your address (to verify you are a constituent), and your position on an issue. These "tallies" are reported to the representative daily.

4. Use Your Leader

Our tool makes it easy to find their official phone numbers and websites. Keep your message professional and respectful—staffers are more likely to helpful when treated with courtesy.
